Disabling OE Security System 1992 XJ Limited

Yes, I searched. Has anyone done this? What is the best way to completely disable it? Is it programmed into my PCM? Would I have to get a new computer or can we simply rip out the main unit & wiring? Having some very serious issues with the system itself & it has to go. Thx for quick responses.

I've never seen the 1992 version. Is there an outboard box specifically for the security system? If so, I'd follow the wiring carefully and see what it does. You might be able to jumper the ignition interlock and remove power to the system to deactivate it.

I know zero about wiring, have an FSM, but don't know how to read wiring diagrams. But I'm bumping this up in the daytime hoping someone with some know-how can assist.

Anyone?

I need this thing gone & I have searched ... can't seem to find a definite, proven method. I know someone out there has done this. You're the guy I need to hear from. I found a PCM from a non-security XJ. Now what? Or do I not even need that?

Help me out, please!

i have a 82 that has the anti theft stickers.. i thought it was a joke.

whats going on with yours?

RTorrez1 10-23-2013 04:36 PM

Is it an OEM system or after market?

_StationWagon_ 10-24-2013 03:22 AM

It is OE like it says in my title. The system activates while driving, malfunctions & goes off at random times. Among other things.

My son's '90 Laredo has done this also. I know nothing about the system, and we're just learning about XJs, BUT, in his XJ there is a small, black micro-switch hanging from a wire just to the right of the driver's kick panel... about where you would find an emergency brake release lever. I assume it was mounted somewhere under the dash. I assume the PO had problems too, located this switch, and pulled it down from wherever it was mounted. I found that if you push this switch it resets the alarm. We don't have any more alarm problems unless we do something like pull the battery for charging and reinstall... then it goes off again.

What would happen if you simply cut the speaker/horn wire?

_StationWagon_ 10-25-2013 11:28 AM

I won't disable the horns because that doesn't fix the problems with the alarm. Driving down the road with the headlights flashing is not cool. Plus there's an immobilizer feature (starter-kill). The system has to go.

I heard that it's programmed into the PCM so that has to be swapped. But supposedly a new PCM will simply detect the alarm module & rearm itself and back to square 1. Apparently the cure would be to disable the security system before swapping in the new PCM. If it doesn't detect a sec system at the first startup, it will never look for it after. That theory sounds most plausible compared to all the other stuff I've read, but I dunno if that's the correct way.

And that still leaves me with the question: how to disable the system?

You are correct, you just need to find the location of the vtss box, it was always behind glove box on other chryslers new yorker , dynasty etc. if you could start the vehicle and unplug the "magic" box , the problems are over. I have never seen a factory one in a xj though.......

If you do in fact have a fact alarm, there will be switches on the back of the lock cyls in the doors. So if you have those ,
There should be a green/orange (-) wire in the driver's side kick panel. Splice into that wire with one of a similar guage, and ground that wire to the chassis. This will permanently disarm your alarm system.
good luck!

92 XJ limited , bad anti- Theif

I know this post is several years old but here we go.
I have been told this works . But I only know of one person who has done it.
Under the dash just to the right of the steering column. There is a small black box with a maroon or burgundy colored plug. That is a security control box.
if you reach up in there while the vehicle is started and running with alarm off and unplug the maroon connector from the box. The alarm will be disabled and the computer will recognize it's been disabled. It will not look for it at startup. No more alarm issues.
On the 1992 that plug is is kind of high up in under the dash. Straight up from the gas pedal
