Diesel Engine
I'm looking at swapping the engine in my '97 XJ for a diesel and I'm not sure what type or size of diesel to put in or what it will cost. Any tips? My Jeep is just a daily driver at this point.

If I was to do it.
I would be looking at the Mercedes 5 Cylinder diesel.

You'll have to locate a totaled complete car for the engine and tranny.
Heres a Grand Cherokee that someone converted to Diesel.

I would expect a diesel to get 30+ mpg.

hes right i've been interested in this too...the only engine that would even be semi economical to swayp would be the 3.9l 4bt cummins and thats not happening without ALOT of work and MONEY

Also keep in mind that the 4bt by itself is close to 750lbs, whereas the 4.0 with trans doesn't even weigh that much. The cherokee is unibody too, you'll have to factor that in. Perhaps some strengthening should be in order, if you plan to hop up the motor the slightest bit. Stock, this motor has almost 130 ftlbs more torque.

STROKE THE 4.0??????? lol
If I remember correctly, using some 4.2L parts and some various machining, you can stroke the 4.0 to a 4.6 or something like that. Supposed to pump out more power and everything.
