I'm asking this question for a friend who 89 XJ starts and runs, then dies and won't start for 1/2 hour. Its an I6 auto. Any ideas on what it could be?

You should keep cheking. Mine had that problem, but mine was worst case scenario, the ECU.

my buddys would do kinda the same thing...it would start up fine run...get goin down the road and cut out til it died and wouldnt start for awhile...we thought the shutdown relay first...then after shaking on the coil pack we thought that was it...but come to find out it was the map sensor..its expensive for a little part but probably cheaper than an ecu...

sorry bout that...crank posistioning sensor....not the map sensor..lol....when his quit running it would throw no spark at all, thats why we was messin with the coil pack...also i dont know if this has anything to do w/ anything or not but the old/bad crank positioning sensor was magnetized pretty good...would stick to the side of the jeep but the new one was jus barely magnetized could barely even tell it was...good luck anyways...
