Default DID i BREAK SUMPIN'

99 cherokee, auto, 4.0 eng. Installed 4.5 inch lift kit, same driveshafts, didnt drop transfer case, dad says i'm hard headed. Went offroadin', got stuck in deep mud, got pulled out. Now wont start unless i cross starter terminals. When it does start, loud squealing sound from underhood or under car, trans doesn't want to shift very easily. Did "wont start" checklist from this forum, cleaned nss switch still nothing unless i cross starter. Still loud squealing. Thanks for any replies.

If you'll name your thread title with proper etiquette you'll get more views and answers.. Just a heads up.

Have you checked any electrical connections under the hood? Checked the fuse box under the hood? NSS wouldnt be your problem, because if it was you could start it in Neutral. Do you have any clue where exactly the sound is coming from? You said underhood or undercar, but which it is does make a difference. Whats your engine bay look like? Caked in mud? Squealing could be a few things ( idler pulley, belt, etc.).

And when you say the trans "doesnt want to shift very easily" what do you mean? Do you mean it doesnt want to shift through the gears (maintaining gear for too long through the RPM's) or that its clunking when shifting, etc.

Also, how deep was the mud? How long it stuck there?

Default did I break something

Sorry for my grammar, trying to be funny. Yes I did check connections under hood, I did the wont start check list found on this forum. All fuses Ok, switched relays around in PCM, cleaned nss as suggested by other members, replaced starter, battery OK, 12.7 volts, 13.9 with engine running, same at starter terminals. The noise may be an idler pulley, putting pressure on belt does not change sound. The trans didnt want to shift into reverse until I put it in drive and moved forward a foot or so, it did make a clunk when it did shift into reverse. Did the same thing next day in garage. Seems to drive and shift ok other than the loud squealing noise. The under side is caked in dried clay up to and including the drums and rotors. Engine compartment is relatively clean. Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

Have you checked the tranny fluid? And what does the squeal sound like? Is it constant or going in and out?

Squealing like the belt would make? Do you know where the sound is coming from?

Mud wasn't too deep, about 1/2- 3/4 up the 27" tires and wasn't stuck for more then 2 minutes

So it IS the belt squealing? Free spin the pulleys to check for resistance, inspect belt for any chips/cracks/etc. replace if damaged. Generally speaking XJ belts need to be pretty tight. Have you load tested the alt. to see what your getting? Clean that clay off, btw.. It's not doing you any good. As for that shifting issue. Def check your fluid, is pinion seal good- not leaking fluid from where rear DS goes into diff? Good luck. How are your DS vibes, btw?
