Default Dented oil filter.

Ok so today i was trying to get my oil filter off. I dident have the correct filter wrench size so i tried to take it off by hand but to no avail. I ended up putting a nice dent in the top of the filter. Would i be able to drive it to town to go get the wrench? The dent is only on the top.

You aren't going to reuse the filter, take a long screwdriver or pry bar and a hammer and hit it in the counter clockwise direction. Once you break the seal it will come of by hand.

If its only a dent and has no hole in it, you should be fine to go get the wrench .

When I had that happen, I took my biggest flathead screwdriver, jammed it through the filter (oil pan underneath it), and then used the screwdriver as a handle to unscrew it.

I carry an old leather belt in my Jeep's tool kit. Works every time.

Just drive to town and buy a high quality Adj. Filter wrench that way it will fit several sizes that can be used on an XJ. I have 11 different filter wrench's that I have bought over the years as better ones came out.

I stopped using a screwdriver 50 yrs ago when I found out there are tools for most every job "For a REASON"!

Mine was stuck just tight enough last time that I couldn't take it off with my hand. I had my old serpentine belt in the back and just used it and a pair of vice grips to hold it tight and it came right off.

Always good to keep those old belts around, they come in handy for many things
