Default Lockers?

So I took out my recently lifted xj today with new tires and gotta say im still not satisfied with its wheeling abilities. I am looking into getting lockers but my friends with trucks say that there is no point in locking my stock xj axles, and that I will break them eventually wether I re-gear or not. What are your guys' opinions? Would it be worth it to lock my stock axles or should I just swap in dana 44's and not waste my time. Keep in mind I am on a college budget, but still have quite a bit of cash saved up.

What size tire and what rear axle do you have? If you have the chrysler 8.25" and your jeep is a '97 or newer, you can run a locker in the rear with up to 33s comfortably. The dana 30 is the same deal. If you are running 33s or smaller it's safe to lock it.

Not to hijack the thread ....but, whats the consincius (check spelling) on 35x10.50 boggers with stock axles? I am wanting to lock my front as well and put 4.56 gears in...d30 hp in front and a 8.8 rear swap soon to follow.

i have a dana 30 hp with a locker, 4.56 and stock shafts. i broke more shafts in stock form then i did when i locked it and regeared it. so it really depends on how well your axle is put together. dont get a cheap-o guy to do it, i would rather pay a certified guy to do it then pay a retard twice to fix it

i have a dana 30 hp , 4.56 gears and stock shafts also and chrysler 8.25 , stock shafts and detroit lockers front and rear and dont have problems

Okay. I have a dana 30 in front and 35 in the rear and as of now 32's. I don't plan on going any bigger than a 33's

The D30 should be fine, but IDK about the 35. I would swap it before locking it. A 8.25 swap is probably gonna be easier and cheaper than a D44. Just make sure its a 29 spline ('96 or later) or you might have a hard time finding a locker for it.

when i went to the junkyard the Chrysler axle was 450 and the dana 44 was 500...so i went with the 30 spline dana 44 and will never regret that. but i would never EVER lock a dana 35...its just a time bomb waitin to explode

im running 33" swamper tsl's , i would deff ditch the 35 before you spend all that money on it

by the time you spend money on gears a locker and chromoly shafts in a 35 its still not worth it when you can just upgrade for cheaper

my jeep is a 1999 XJ... so does that mean i have the d35 rear or the 8.25? whats the most likely spline count? if i have the 8.25 rear is it safe to go ahead and lock it up now?

Well thats a good thing...congrats! Look into a Aussie Locker. From what research I've done that seams like the best bang for the buck. Good luck!

with yours being a 99 its a 29 spline , depending how much money you have to play with , although the aussie is a great locker i put a detroit in my front and rear and love them
