Dealer installed recall cat, New o2.. now there's issues
Hey everyone,
A bit desperate to figure out what's up. Took the jeep in for recall service.. had a new cat and o2 sensor (they broke the o2 getting it out and replaced that free too) installed and the pcm reflash.
My old exhaust was a rusted mess and the dealer let me take the jeep without cat back exhaust since I had a new cat back at home and didn't want to pay for labor, etc..
Jeep ran fine in town, drove it for lunch and back from dealer. On my way home though, right after getting onto the highway, I lose most of the power and it seems like it's bogging. Ses light comes on almost immediately, but then it just takes off again and didn't act up for 20 miles. As soon as I cancel the cruise it does it again, and once more before I got home while pulling away from a stop sign..
Really feels like a car with a plugged cat while the issue is happening, but it's so sporadic I don't know if it could really be a bad, brand new cat.. especially because I ran it up in rpms pretty good while it was running decent and it pulled just like it always does. Also the issue didn't change at all between no car back exhaust and the new cat back installed.
I unhooked the battery for 3 hours, hooked it back up.. now no code but the issue is just as bad.
I live in the middle of no where and don't have a reader anymore, so idk what the code is yet.
Any ideas? This is my daily driver and I'm lost.
In case it helps, some pics of the new setup.

The issue is that the dealer is now 30 miles from here, and I'm not sure if it will make it back under its own power. Even if it does, I could be causing damage by continuing to drive it.

Are you a AAA member? if not, join and tow it. Ask for a flat bed truck.
BTW, what year etc is your Jeep?

The cat doesn't look oem? They ordered it and installed it per a recall they claim. Is it possible it's the wrong cat completely?
They did it free and the bill said the cat had a msrp of $499.99.
1996 sport 4.0 240k. Ok back to the dealer it goes

The O2S heaters fuse in the PDC may have been blown.
Check the 15 Amp mini fuses in the PDC.
I don't have '96 wiring diagrams to go by, only '95 and '97, but a pic of the '96 PDC shows two 15 Amp mini fuses, one of which should be the O2S heaters fuse.

The check engine light blinked out code 12 and 54 this morning, but after a short drive now it only blinks 12 and 55. Perhaps a coincidental cam position sensor issue? I changed the oil and filter Sunday and the filter is near the wiring for the cam sensor, but it looks intact and the plug is not corroded.
I should add that the issue occurs with a cold engine and does not change when it is up to temp.

Thanks for the suggestion. Both fuses are intact however.

Maybe you should have the battery capacity checked and check the grounds at the oil dipstick tube and at the coil mount bracket, as well as the condition of the battery post connectors for corrosion.

It's legit but I lost the contact info when my computer crashed. I believe this is it.

It's legit. My 96 has the same recall when searched by VIN.
http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/pdf/E22.pdf
From Jeep's website:
The problem is...
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on your vehicle (VIN xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) contains
software that may not be capable of detecting a deteriorating catalyst. This can result in
failure to illuminate the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) malfunction indicator light (MIL)
warning the customer of a potential problem. Also, under certain conditions, some catalytic
converters may be subject to mechanical degradation that causes them to rattle. This
catalytic converter degradation eventually could result in higher exhaust emission levels and
the illumination of the MIL.
What your dealer will
do...
DaimlerChrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). To do this, your
dealer will reprogram your vehicle s Powertrain Control Module. The work will take about an
hour to complete. However additional time may be necessary depending on how dealer
appointments are scheduled and processed. Your dealer will also inspect your vehicle’s catalytic
converter. If the catalyst is found to be "rattling" or loose, the dealer will replace it free of charge
(parts and labor).
NOTE: This recall does not include the replacement of other exhaust system components. If other
exhaust system components require replacement, the associated repair costs are your
responsibility.
Your catalytic converter warranty period will be: (A) eight years or 80,000 miles from the
vehicle’s original in-service date; or (B) twelve months or 12,000 miles from the date your recall
service is performed, whichever of (A) or (B) is later.
