the way to check is to under your jeep and see if you have an electrical connector or a cable coming out of your transfercase near the output shaft. or you could pull your gauges fuse and if your speedo still works then it is cable, if not it is electrical.

I've been fighting the same issue on my brothers 99 Xj..

replaced gauge cluster, cleans all connections and still no speedo and not sure where to start looking.

your 91 should be cable. it will go from the speedo to a reduction box about a foot away, then the cable will exit through the firewall high on the drivers side then down to the transfer case. it will be threaded on the t-case with a finger type holder holding the speedo gear in place. remove that bolt, and pull out the speedo gear. mark the position with a paint pen so it goes back in the same way.

that's it, it's that simple, start at the speedo gear, sometimes the plastic gear will strip and won't spin on the output shaft.

same goes for nick n ii, same idea, only electronic connection at the speedo gear. check the speedo gear.
