dana 60?? dana 70? just curious
im just curious and need some input.im thinking \of going very big on tire size next winte with 4.88s and lockers what hd axles fix under xj with little mods....i can weld. i can make stuff but prefer to bolt right up or move a spring perch.
i got a dana 44 rear now 37s with auto locker to much for 44? |
depends on your wheeling, i'd say no, and if you're worried upgrade the shafts. the problem is if you jump up a little in tires, and have a huge d60 axle, you really aren't gaining anything. thats a nice set up right where you're at, unless you just wanna bog through mud. then go bigger.

14 bolt rear is hugungous. there's a local off road shop that throws them away all day long. i almost bought them for my yj build, and decided no way.
well no that i think about it if i just upgrade the guts (shafts, joints, gears and hubs, ive already got a trussed dana 30 up ront i could just beef them up. im making a truss for my rear 44 that will have a link in top to tie in to a cross member with hiem joints where the floor pan curves up...tied in framerails, for anti wrap,
Can I get the number of that shop? Great axel if want to go big for a trail rig with a lot of power.
attitude off road. i see them on ebay all the time for cheap as well.
a 44 front is marginal on 37's
it can be done, but by the time you beef it up enough to hold up to 37's you could have done a 60. i found out the hard way 44 rear sucks on 37's took me 6 months of wheelin to strip the gears (33 splien annoy shafts and an ox locker), didn't last long enough imo |
everyone's wheeling is different. how long have you had your set up now, since it sounds like you haven't broken anything yet. i know that set up for me would be fine, i would not break anything, and i could go where i want to.

ive heard of many stock running gear holding up but ive heard and seen more swaped d train standing strong....what would you recomend front and rear that requries least amount of steering mods and changes...basically i dont want to do to much fab. i want heavy duty axles and little wider stance even if its 4 inches wider...lol
i am going to run an 8 lug ft 44 on 36 in irocks. hopefully it will hold up. i am going to upgrade the shafts and u-joints also. i wanted a 60 but too much money! i had 36 in irocks with a ft. 30 on my last xj and beat the crap out of it and never broke anything! maybe i will have the same luck on this xj!:D---BRIAN

Not very much aftermarket for the Dana 70 but plenty for the Dana 60. 14 bolt FF Chevy axles are really good, if you get a 14 bolt make sure its not a semi-floater they are junk.
i've also heard not a big aftermarket for the 14 bolt, i've never looked myself
14 bolts are becoming more and more popular. There after market grows everyday. Alot of people solve the clearance issure by shaving an 1.5" of the bottom of the diff and making a custom diff cover for it. Which provides more clearance than a D60. However it does sacrifice overall strength of the case. Me my self I'm keeping my eyes out for a newer wrecked F250 or 350 and pulling the front and rear axles out of it for cheap. D60/10.5 sterling with 4 wheel disc brakes. Then all I got to do is grab the porortioning valve along with the master cylinder and possibly the brake booster and the axles will be ready to go.
