Good afternoon from, across the pond, wishing you wherever you are a fantastic new year.
Now for my issue, i have a stock xj 4.0 and have been advised at my latest MOT TEST, that i have excessive rear play on one of my rear half shafts, if you grab the Tyre at 9 and 3 positions you can pull it towards you then push back again. the other side has hardly any movement.
As this is a c clip axle does this suggest an issue with the c clip or the rear outer bearing or indeed the inner bearing nr the crown wheel?


Over to you guys as i have no experiences with these axles at all.

My initial thought would be to verify status/condition of the c clip. I haven't personally taken a D35 apart before, so I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I've done other types, but not these. However, there are a lot on here that can guide you.
Good question... I'll be watching to see how it's answered.

worst case scenario if it gets this bad...... you could always see if MOT will pass it with this..... lol

No i think that there is zero chance of that passing an MOT over here, but full marks for effort.

having seen a couple of vids showing how to remove the c clip, it might be normal but it is certainly more than the drivers side

The best thing to do is take the rear diff cover off and see if there is any actual play there. If not then the issue is on the outside part.

How much play on the pinion yoke. Can yo wiggle it and can you rotate the drive shaft a little while the vehicle does not move. They can get a lot of play in them from normal wear and all of us that have them with a lot of miles have that kind of situation. The above pics of busted axles can happen, but that is not a function of wear.

plenty of youtube videos.
But its easy to pull the diff cover and should be an 8mm cross bolt, pull it and the center pin can be removed or just slide it out past the c-clip and give axle a push in and you can pul it out, might just need a new C-Clip could be wearing and be thin.
Worst case is you need an axle, c clip and spider gears.

I never gave it a thought it might be wear on the c clip, i will get it up in the air when the weather is a bit better and have a looky, Still what better time to give it a change of diff oil, wont be worse off anyways.
