d44 question

I recently bought a front waggy d44 ('82) and a stock rear d44 out of an xj.

The rear already has the 3.54-55 gears i want. Some people have said 3.54 and 3.55 are basically the same, when i divided the numbers it was like 3.54232 or some ****. Anyways.. Will any d44 gears work in my 82 waggy? As in i can just go to the pick n pull and find any d44 on anything that has 3.54-3.55 gears and pull the ring and pinion? The waggy has 2.73 and i want to match the rear.

R&P sets alone are so cheap, I would just get a new set. Most waggy D44's have 3.54 already, so if you can track down another one, that would be easiest. I do not think "any" D44 will do. I know Rubicon ones are totally different, but someone else should chime in on Ford 44's, because I don't know if they made any low pinion sets.

Also, yes, all 3.50-3.55 gears are considered the same, or close enough to run.

Not all 44's will fit. You have a standard cut and a reverse cut(even though the are not actually cut in a reverse manner). Your 44's should both be LP. Which are standard cut. Also, not all XJ 44's have 3.55's. Some come with 3.31's in them. If you get a set of standard gears, you will be fine. Rubicon gears would fit. But you will need to drill out the bolt holes in the carrier to make them fit. It's easier to just get non-Rubicon gears.

if you've got both axles out of the rig why keep 3:55s go to 4:10s or 4:56s right out of the box. ie match your tire size with your gears now

Yeah, im just making sure i can go and look at pretty much d44 and know that the gears will work. Then ill crawl under there and check out the gears.

bc. i only have 31's right now, and im going to just change the waggy to 3.55 or w/e to match my rear, then save up for tires, then new gears and drop them both at once on the cherokee.. I have a friend that can do my gears for a case of beer, so im not worried about eating the regearing costs...
