How difficult is it to change the pinion shaft seal on the D30?

not too difficult, but if you over torque the pinion nut putting it back on, then you have to redo the crush sleeve

Remove driveshaft
use a punch and mark the pinion and pinion nut
use a impact gun and remove pinion nut
remove yoke
pry out seal
tap in new seal
reinstall yoke
line up the marks on the pinion and pinion nut
reinstall driveshaft

thats about it in a nut shell

xj hp d30 should just have shims, no crush sleeve. i believe just the tj d30 has the crush sleeve.
follow mattpar's instructions, then just torque your pinion nut down to about 200 lb/ft.
you may need to use a set of large adjustables to hold the pinion while you torque the nut.

Caged is right about the XJ D30s having shims only. No crush sleeve.

1.) Remove front DS at front axle.
2.) Remove front pinion nut, washer and pinion yoke.
3.) Pop out old pinion seal with blade screwdriver.
4.) CAREFULLY tap in new pinion seal.
5.) Re-install pinion yoke, washer and nut.
6.) Re-torque pinion nut.
7.) Re-install front DS at front axle.
8.) Check and if needed add front axle gear oil. With a bad seal I'm sure you lost some.

you say to use a punch to mark the pinion and pinion nut?? can you explain this?
is this so you know where the nut was when you tightn it up you end in same spot,ense have sorta a double check on the torque not to ovr tightn..


what is the torque for the pinion nut??? iv heard ranging from 40ft/lbs to 75 ft/lbs.

also the carrier bearings.. whats the torque on those 4 bolts?
i have a 97 cherokee, dana 30.
