I've wondered about this space also for a DIY sub. I'd junk the plastic trim piece and make a wood frame that sits in there. Maybe oiled Teak or Cherry.
Really though that well is so perfed with rust at this point the sub might sound better to the other cars on my drive to work.

haha, I just wanted as minimal impact as possible for the day I decide I don't need it, so I left the Stock Plastic in tact, just a few holes

A whole piece would have to wrap around the back are where the hatch sits, thats the only bummer about that.

I was wondering if you guys want gray or black felt or if it matters? I haven't searched for gray but I'm sure I can find it.

Me I'd like one uncovered if at all possible for a 10" sub.. I will cover it myself I just need it ready to install and just need to be covered.

Yea, I would just take one uncovered as well. Cut for a 10".

How about something like this. Holds a 10 right now, fits into the cubby hole and has around 1.1 cu. ft. if I recall.

Thanks. I finished the system today but it is too late to tune it, but It sounds good for the most part and no rattles. I wired in my amp under the back seat and then fished the wires under the plastic side panels. There are a few slots under that hole in the back side panel where I put the sub. I ran my wire through there. Yeah, they are spent casings from an AR-15, 45 and 40. I need to reload them so I can shoot them. Just happened to have them laying around for some reason, I normally gather them up in a box.

I have been Extremely busy at work guys and galls so its hard to get the time to make more of these things. I'll try to get some done for ya. I will figure a cost when I'm done with one since the original will have taken way more time.

I did this years ago in my XJ after seeing a write-up on JeepsUnlimited. It's real easy and you don't really need fab skills, just common sense and some decent tools. When I made mine I had never "built" anything before ... and I'm "just" a girl.

Have it posted on my CarDomain page during my XJ's rice period. Not that this is a rice mod. I still have the unit and except for the fact that my sub is pretty beefy, I'm very happy with it. By "beefy" I mean that it's a log throw woofer, and it's a fat 10" that sits rather close to the outer sheet metal. It will handle 800w RMS, so it peaks much higher. I could never apply that type of power cleanly in such an enclosure. I had to use a different type grill from the OP, because a flat grill would not fit. I went with the "upholstered" look. If I had it to do again, I might have eliminated the screws. Might.

The damping material is essential ... at least for me it was. Inside the XJ is like a freaking concert, outside you can hardly tell. Don't be fooled, I power that sucker with a dedicated 600W Profile mono amp. But where I live, you don't want folks knowing what you have in your vehicle!

I sealed up the enclosure with structural foam, soft enough to get into the corners, doesn't crumple like styrofoam although it kind of looks like it. It does a great job behind the tail lights. You'll also want to seal off the C & D pillars so your bass is tight & not "boomy".

I cut the seat belt ... at the time it was the quickest way, but dumb. Oh well, live & learn. And if you take your time to carefully re-install the panel, and be patient, it will not rattle. If it does, I can't tell as the bass is pretty deep (I also have an Alpine equalizer ... yeah, I know, old skool . You "young 'uns" probably never even seen an equalizer, LOL!).

Not a hard mod at all, guys. You can get creative & have some fun with it. I've tweaked mine since to get it just right, but a less powerful sub would do me better.

station wagon were did you get that thing that rolls out and covers your stuff in the back i want one, but i havent seen them around. i live in the ghetto so i need to hide my things before my stuff gets jacked.

I got mine from a junk yard. It's stock on many XJ's, was stock on mine, but the last owner must have junked it. The brackets were already in the Jeep. They're hard to find, but they're out there. Yup, I need it to hide stuff as well!

OK, sound test is confirmed. The system sounds great! I have a few issues though. I have one small rattle that is there only when its turned up high and its very hard to hear so I am having a hard time finding it. The most annoying problem is the side of the XJ vibrates, haha I am looking at a remedy and think I have found one but I will report back on it. Other then that it sounds superb.

Didn't you use any damping? Iused Dynamat, but I've heard guys talk about roofing stuff, say it's cheaper & works just as well. I dunno.
