Is this a crazy idea?

I have replaced 4 water pumps in a row with each being faulty.

Finally got a good one, but I forgot the damn sealant on the heater line, where it goes into the pump and it is leaking.

So, I'm thinking of instead of redoing the water pump, hack saw off the hard line part of the heater hose so it is straight and I can unbolt it from the WP. Get a longer hose from the heater core and basically clamp that thing on there.

Is this stupid?

Am I just so tired of redoing the WP?

Hahah, yeah, I can prolly do it in about 45 minutes at this point, wth.

It'd probably take you longer than that to saw it off. People have replaced the pipe in favor of a longer hose but I see no reason to if your pipe is in good shape.

Consider the source of the pumps.

Yeah, even known national brands are made of Chinesium today. I put a premium AC Delco pump on it a year ago and just changed it last week because the shaft seal was leaking. However, my original power steering pump is 267K miles old!

Besides that, if the threads are leaking, sawing it off and lengthening the hose isn't going to do anything to seal it. You can remove it and install a standard hose barb, that will work. Space is kinda limited and you may need a thin walled socket to screw it in.

IMHO...yup

I'd be concerned with trying to get the hose to seal when clamped to the smooth surface of the inlet tube. Just cut the inlet tube and remove it from the pump. Use 5/8" hose barb x 3/8" NPT brass fitting in it's place (sealant first!). Don't have to worry with rust. I've had one on for over 4yrs now with no issues.

I used the cheap Dorman one from AutoZone over 10 years ago and it's still fine!
