cranking over bit no fire or fuel pressure.
 

I got a 96 jeep cherokee. It runs like a top an never has let me down but the other day i was driving it an shut it off for about 15 min an jumped back in it an all it would do is crank. I then got out an checked to see if it had fuel pressure an it did then. So then i unplugged a spark plug an put a old spark plug in the to see if it was getting spark an it doesnt have spark at all. I took out the cps an looked to see if it was dirty an cleaned it real good an also the pick up in the distributor. Then i checked the fuel pressure agin an it isnt getting any now but pump is still running. I dont have much money to put into it right now anless i absolutly have to. What is wrong with it or what should i do?

CPS is bad.

put new one in ( or get one from Junkyard for cheaper), and should start right up.

Did you have the plug grounded when you checked for spark? I would guess your fuel pump is bad. Just because it makes nose dose not mean it is working. See if it will stutter on some starting fluid. Just don't use an entire can.

my apologies I read your post but it didnt register( the fuel part), you ARE NOT getting fuel pressure now , BUT YOU ARE getting spark now? Is that correct?

if that is indeed the case, I agree with brutalxj. fuel pump is on its way out or has gone.

The fuel pump is new an i know its good. It isnt getting spark at all. Does the pick up in the distributor control when it gets fuel too?

When u say cps do u mean crank position sensor or cam position sensor?

Some very basic testing is in order here. Anything less is guesswork.

So you have verified lack of spark by removing a plug and grounding the electrode and watching for spark? If you don't have spark, the #1 suspect is the crankshaft position sensor. The #2 suspect is the ignition coil, but the crank sensor fails way more often. Both of these components can be tested, although testing of the crank sensor is not always conclusive. Cleaning won't really help you on a failing crank sensor as once they start to fail electrically, replacement is the ONLY option. Buy it directly from Jeep for the best reliability. Aftermarket crank sensor are "hit and miss" with a lot of miss.

If spark is GOOD, then try a small splash of gasoline into the intake or a spray of starting fluid. If the engine starts and runs for a short time using this technique, then you have properly identified a "fuel delivery" problem.

Its getting fuel so scratch that. I just put a crank position sensor and a pick up coil in the distributor an still does the same thing. No fire still. What else could it be?

Tested your ignition coil yet? As I mentioned, it is the #2 cause of no spark. There are others, but you must rule the coil in or out before moving onto the others.

The coil can be tested pretty easily. You test for both primary and secondary resistances.

You'll need a meter and a manual with the procedure / specs.

Well i took the coil off last night an havnt had time to get a new one but im pretty sure thats the problem cuz its got a big crack down one side of it. Ill let ya know if that fixs it
