This post is an combination of pointing out a possible alternate cause for a crank no start issue and also me looking for validation on my thoughts.

My son was driving my 1991 Cherokee 4.0 and the XJ just stopped running. It would crank just fine, but not start. On the side of the road I changed the crankshaft position sensor and also the fuel filter to no avail. I had it towed home to continue working on it.

I have done a bunch of back probing and tracing wires, changed out other sensors, nothing was working. Finally remembering to check engine codes, there was an engine light flash sequence of 54. Camshaft position sensor. I took my distributor out and apart and didn't notice anything visually. I had another intact distributor laying around. I installed that with no luck. Bought a new distributor, and as I was rotating the crankshaft looking for TDC, I noticed the rotor on the distributor was not turning. I had my son try to start it while I watched the rotor and it did not turn at all.

So now I am thinking it is an broken timing chain. I am going to start today on that and I am looking for some feedback on my assumption of timing chain. Are there other possibilities?

Take distributor out and look straight in to the cam gear that drives the dizzy, it might be worn away . Thats how my old 92 stroker died. The timing chains on these motors are fairly robust
