Ok, I'm going there after work to see it and probably have it towed away. I agree on why the flexplate is being cracked, but why would the block be cracked? Wouldn't be leaking? There was no fluids leaking when I bought it. They guy is avoiding my call and texts at the moment.

Sorry for all the questions, but you guys know the most, and I need the help.

sounds like BS to me. NEVER have i heard of this happening with a cast iron block.

Also another big clue you're being fed BS....

YOU CAN'T WELD CAST IRON

Get your jeep, and run away asap. Pay him nothing - he didn't do any work on it

I'm going over there after work and having it towed away. I have the title, so it's mine. AAA will tow it for me for free. I'm just wondering where to take it for an honest answer.

ask around. I tend to use smaller shops because they need to keep customers coming back, so they are usually honest and don't try to screw you over. Dealerships usually at least know what's up and are a good default fallback.

A good thing to consider might be to post in the CO forum and ask the locals!

The owner of the shop has invited me down to see the problem when I get off work. He has the transmission out, and he says it will be obvious what is wrong. He says they tried to nickel weld the cast iron and there are dowel pins in it where they tried. I will see it with my own eyes.

roger. Take some pics.

Well, the block was cracked. The "ears" the hold the tranny in place were cracked and someone tried to weld it. Normally a plate would block the view when replacing a flexplate, but when you remove the cover plate, you can see the crack. I have attached two images showing the crack in the block.

I've seen wreck do this, but never just installing a trans. I'd say sell it find something else, or swallow it and have a hell of a learning experience!

Sold it to the shop for exactly what I paid for it, $800. Actually, a mechanic bought it for his in-laws. He is buying the new engine from the owner for $1400 and installing it himself. So, in the end, nothing lost.

The shop owner said the engine may have been a junkyard engine that had broken and they welded it and installed it in the jeep. He doesn't think installing the tranny did it either.

The owner and the shop were honest at least. I would do business with them.

Someone was a bloomin idiot that needs a "here's your sign" sign for trying that, and for breaking it...
