crack head broken window

A crack head broke the passenger side rear quarter glass panel on the door. i don't think its a "vent" window cause it doesn't move. but how do i put a new piece of glass in? i took door panel off and looked at the project...how do i get that divider thing that separates the movable window and the quarter solid window to move? i got a piece of glass for $40 at salvage and was quoted $50-75 to install.... i hate crack heads.

screws hold the bottom and the top of the rail in. you have to take the window seal out to see the top one. bottom one is there too. it is kinda PIA to get to but there is a hole there to get to it. someone busted mine out too to steal my radio so i feel your pain.

did you get the rail from the JY with the new window? when I got mine from the JY they shipped it in the rail so it was pretty simple.

calijeep Apr 6, 2009 06:55 PM

nope. no rail from JY. there was a rail inside the door panel when i cleaned out all glass to investigate the project. i just can't figure out how to move that piece that separates the two glass pieces in the door w/o taking out the big window which is powered and then i have to disconnect wiring and yada yada. isn't there any other way! ahhh... i just need to move that stupid black divider over just 3/4 of and inch! did i mention i hate crack heads.

you don't need to remove the power window. I just unscrewed the divider and leaned it out of the way. if I remember correctly there is a plate under the 1/4 glass loosen it to give you a little room.

you don't have to take the big window out. just unscrew the the srews at the top and the bottom. remove the widow seal from the top and you will see the screw. then follow the rail to bottom and unscrew that. cant remember exactly how it goes but it was fairly simple to figure out. the pull that rail out and install your new glass into it. I believe its gloed in. then reinstall the rail with new glass in it. you will have to take the door panel off to get to the lower srew (or bolt can't remember which it is)

unscrew the top and bottom screw. you'll find the top one under the weather stripping/window seal. follow that divider down to bottom to unscrew bottom.

my fault the screw for the top is ontop of the door. :dunno: not under the window seal. just ran to the store and took a look to refresh my memory.

there is a screw on topp of the door frame that screws into a metal lip that is welded to the black divider. the welded metal piece does not allow for me to move divider from one side to the other. the divider also holds the big window and cannot be moved to one side or the other. if it wasnt for that stupid metal piece on top of the divider...

had to put the project off till the morn. the crack heads are circling the Jeep as we speak. hopefully they will see that the bag i taped over the window CLEARLY means there are no goods inside. i will try and pull the divider down a bit to allow that welded metal clip to pass the door frame lip so i can move it out of the way... the piece is a runner for the big window but it doesnt hold it. you can unbolt that middle piece and pull it out. take out the one or two bolts holding it in. just follow down the rail and unbolt them. my glass came from the jy already in this piece and that is all i did. unbolt the old one slide it out and slide new one in.

ok. i got it done. just in time for the rain. it def was a PITA but its done for cheap. there was a screw on top of frame to the window divider and a hex head 10mm bolt inside door. the PITA was the small pop rivet in the middle of divider attached to the door frame which i ended up breaking. but it's all together and power windows work.....BUT the tint is just slightly off. the replacement has a slight mirror tint that my other privacy windows don't. oh well. i saved $110. its done. thanks for advice as always. Jeepers rock.

ok...well since you fixed yours, maybe i can hijack this thread and get some help.

i have the same issue on my 2001. i got a new piece of glass from the junkyard (with no divider). i pulled the divider from my jeep by unscrewing the top and unbolting the bottom. it seems to have a couple small shards of glass still stuck in it with glue or adhesive. i removed what i could and now i have the new glass in and everything put back together. the problem that i have is that the window now moves up and down and it shouldnt...leading me to believe that i need some glue or adhesive to hold it in place. i have heard that the divider piece comes from the dealer with a window already in it. i assume its glued in. so any thoughts on what i should use to try to stick it in place so that it wont slide up and down?

gorilla glue?, windshield glue (that black tar stuff), <insert fellow jeeper suggestions HERE>

thanks guys.

gorilla glue it is. now time to dry
