Couple of newbie questions...
Ok I have to admit i am 16 years old and i have saved up for my own ride for quite a while i finally managed what i got is a pretty crisp 2001 Cherokee XJ which needed some work... I also have to admit that even so i am AP Physics i dont really have a clue about my XJ.. i know how everything works but thats about it. When i got it the back ball bearing on the left side was making aload of sounds i took it to the workshop and it turned out that due to strain it had practicly melted and it had damaged the inside of the axle. They fixed it straightened out theshaft and i have driven about 1000 kilometers with it and its still fine. I was just wondering if weather or not puttin bigger wheels will damage it again because of the extra strain they have on the mechanics and weather or not it is wise to considerkeeping the ones i have on.. just normal street tire dunno which size they are.
My second question was does anybody know how much a back locker costs and weather or not it something me and my dad could do by ourselves... I am an expat living in the middle east and i would like to see some dessert but the last time i couldnt get the car out of the sand without external help. Would it also be wise to instal a front locker or is that rather something you do for a bit more ...prof. wheeling i just need it for the cases where i am stuck in the sand.
I appreciate all help =) and reading this forum there seems to be alot of it thx in advance

D30 is what you have in the front and you either have the chrysler 8.25 or D35 in the rear...
D35
8.25
They are kind of alike, but the D35 is more oval and on the 8.25, the top and bottom of the cover are parellel to each other... I believe some compare it to a pumpkin...

You need some big fat high flotation tires for the sand. 31X10.50R15 on 15 X 8 wheels, but you will have to lift it to clear. No rough tread, get the mildest you can find.

If you can afford it, they make sand tires, (not paddles) but just tires with not alot of gap between the lugs. Or regular all terrains or just a normal everyday radial tires are wayyyyy better in the sand than any meaty mud tire. Trust me I frequent the dunes at silver lake and have had run 3 diffrent types of tires. I have found that a bald set of 31" toyo open country performs better than new BFG all terrains.
When in the sand your also going to want to run around 10 or 11 pounds in all 4 tires. I can make it all over hell in 2wd with 10psi in the tires. I dont have any lockers and have never had a problem, but i think they are always a good idea!
Also if your in the desert by yourself, I would invest in a winch and a sand anchor! Just may save your life depending on how far out you are!
