cooling fan options (help me decide)
I drive a '92 2wd/ax 15/with AC. I need a new radiator, my aux fan is shot, and I have no shroud on my clutch fan, so I'm ready to start addressing these issues. This is almost completely an on road vehicle and my little bit of off road driving is just down service roads on a hunting lease. I don't face bumper to bumper gridlock traffic. My cooling needs are nothing like what many of you rock crawlers with auto transmissions face.
I'm trying to decide if I should go with a 3 core radiator of if a 2 core would be enough. I'm going to ditch my clutch fan for an electrical setup, but I worry that a 3 core might be a bit too thick. I have a taurus fan hanging in my garage and considered using that alone as that shroud will pretty much cover the entire radiator. I would wire it with an adjustable controller. If the taurus fan is too thick, I would probably use 2 stock type aux fans (10 s-blades). I would probably leave one wired in the stock way and the other wired using the adjustable controller. Out of these options, which would you favor?
My plan was to order from radiatorbarn.com... any issues with that?

lol yeah that's the one. I just got out and messed around under my hood and am curious how I will even get the taurus fan to fit horizontally. I'm sure someone's done it, I'll just have to dig around a bit. I'm kind of leaning towards the dual fan setup so that I know the stock aux one is dedicated for A/C use.

Hope you have a serious alternator. I got one i was going to but in and bench tested the strt up. 100amps to get it turning and 55 continus. your stock alt is 90amps. so when its on your using 60% of your electrical systen just to run it.
if you still wana do it

Wow, that's crazy high. I thought I read somewhere that it was less than people were originally claiming, but if you bench tested it then I'll trust it. Anyone want to buy a nice clean taurus fan? haha..

just go find a 16in fan from a junk yard out of a foriegn car (make sure it is the main cooling source for the car.....ie only fan) it will fit into the jeeps mechanical fan shroud with a little mod. Also chech and see what the factory fuse/relays amp rating is from the car you take it out of and use the same. most are 30 to 40 amps. i also upgraded to a 136amp alt
thats what i did any way. you can see a few pic of it in my build page ---------v

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I had pretty much decided to find a fan that would fit the stock shroud and wire that up, but I wasn't sure a 16" would fit so I'll read through your build thread. What alternator did you use? I've read about using one from a full size Dodge truck, so today I'm going to search online and see if I can find a specific model to be looking for.

go to car-part.com
do a 98 grand cherokee with the v8 and 136 amp.
it will bring up everything compatible and give you prices in your area.
I use a fan from a 99 taurus with the 3.0. its a dual fan setup and i used the bigger one, mostly because i had it laying around

Thanks man. Now that alternator is one where you have to grind down part of your mount, correct?
Concerning the fan, I've decided to go with a late model stock aux fan (10 s-blades) and then probably a 14" Procomp e-fan. I've already ordered the aux fan and should have it by the weekend when I install my new 2 row radiator, waterpump, t-stat, and new hoses. I don't know the service history of this thing as I've only had it since last fall, so I'm the type that prefers to spend a little more and do everything so that I know for sure.
