the cap shouldn't blow, there should be a hole in the top for the pressure to escape, well there is on mine anyway. And I think your radiator cap is busted.

I've heard of using some later-model Dodge pressurised coolant bottles that fit neatly in the place of the OEM one, but haven't tried them myself yet.
I also know you can get replacement bottles - with caps - for a reasonable price from Morris 4x4 Center. I just consider the thing a maintenance item, write the date on it when I replace it, and figure I'll be doing it again in about five years (I usually replace the fan clutch and the coolant bottle together, just to save myself wondering if they'll fail.)

its renix, unless it was replaced the bottle is 20 years old. Mine sucked in my 89, i bought a plastic replacement for $30and had no more issures. I'd just get the replacement that I could have the fastest / cheapest and wait till if fails again in x amount of years. or replace it again before it fails like he said, but if the first one lasted that long, the replacement shouldn't fail too soon

Do you hear banjos?
You can also replace it with something like this. There are many variations of this type of reservoir available.

yeah i got the 96 motor but its still the regular coolant system i think... the cap doesnt shoot off but coolant flows out all around it... doesnt tighten anymore... just spins and spins... i guess ill just replace it... Saw a add and Napa started carrying alot of stuff nobody does and the coolant reservoir is one of them and its like $36 bucks... lucky me theres actually one in stock in town... if its right... so probly just gonna grab it in the AM and fix it... just wanted to check if there was anything else out there... it would kinda have to be picky with the way the lines go in the bottle so i guess ill go back stock... and just plan to replace in a few years again... lol... thanks guys!

My Jeep dealer strongly advised me to buy a new cap when I bought the new bottle. I first of all said no, paid for the bottle, and left. But then I went back in and bought a cap.
I figured he knew what he was talking about.....

Here is the aluminum tank I put on mine. It is expensive but it will outlast the rest of the Jeep so no more plastic footballs.

I just bought mine from Morris 4x4 Center. $26.99 + 6.99 s&h, total $33.98. Mine a 87 limited. Water pump went. Got that on. All hoses toast, and the plastic vacuum heater switch broke off. Got the complete heater hose set with clamps, for $55.95, and the heater valve for, $55.00. All at the same place, Kenosha County Classics. There web site is, http://wwwteamgrandwagoneer.com/ Total was $127.60, and it got here in a week.
