Looks like a heater control valve. I think some guys here know how to delete/bi-pass, if necessary.

You probably need to replace that heater control valve.

Over the years I have had two of them do that.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I'll be sure to replace that when I get offf shift. What does this part do for my xj? Just so I have an understanding of it.

Just did some google research and found that it helps to control the coolant that flows to the heater core. Which in turns help heat the cab. I have always had warm heat but not hot. So when I go to replace this, should I buy a nice brass one to replace? Or just go with plastic? Not too sure if it will help my case. No A/C either.
