Default Coil on plug swap

I have a 97 ZJ with the same motor, intake, and pretty much the same wiring harness as a 99 XJ. Anybody ever done a coil on plug swap from a 00-01 XJ to a pre 2000 XJ or ZJ? Question is, is it easily done?

There's a mod that uses an ignition coil (six wire) from a Dodge Viper to do what you're looking for. The mod was done some time ago so I would have to search for the thread. It's not on this forum.

The mod was to circumvent having to use the POS 00/01 coil pack.

Is there a particular advantage to doing so? Like a measurable gain in power or economy? Or is the goal just to get rid of moving parts?

The '99 cherokee is rated at 190 HP. The '00-'01 Cherokees are rated at 210 HP. I'm pretty sure that's the only difference except for the 0331 head. Plus the fact that it would clean up the engine bay a little considering there are no spark plug wires.

Why is the coil pack a POS? I have it on my xj and I have no problems with it. Is there a way to create a stronger spark? Run a bigger gap?

Oh and wasn't the hp rating for the 00-01 xj 193?

Yeah it seems like a lot of work for 3 HP and 6 lb-ft of torque
