CNS fixed by starting in neutral. Stopped working again.
Had My 96 xj die on me while driving it a week ago, had someone come take a look today they ran a scan tool and got these codes. IAC was replaced before scan took place.
As he was about to leave I tried starting it in neutral and it fired right up, ran beautifully. Took it for a few drives around the block got it up to operating temperature, shut it off and started back up in park and neutral several times, seems the problem had been solved just by pulling apart plugs and by swearing at it a bit.
Then I’ve taken it for a drive down the shops, about 5 minutes away, and it’s done the same thing as before, but won’t start in neutral or park.
Now I’m home, but the jeep is still at the shops.
I tried to spray water down the CAS, still not luck.
I’ve been told to let it get stone cold, and try again in neutral, which will be a tomorrow job.
Why would this be happening? Could it be a temperature failure for the CAS?
Why would the IAC code be coming up if it’s new and it still started?
thanks heaps - jeep noob

1) re the new IAC. Given the quality of aftermarket parts it could be dead out of the box.
2) I don't know what you mean by the CAS you are pouring water on but if you mean the crankshaft position sensor on the bell housing that has nothing to do with the Camshaft position sensor that the code is showing for.... that's in the distributor, don't pour water in there.
If it's not getting a cam sensor signal it won't start/run

hey mate sorry I do mean the crank angle sensor on the bell housing…. Was told that can get dicky with temperature and I should try to cool it down.
definitely didn’t put any water in the distributer lol.
could the cam sensor signal be intermittent for any reason ?

Sure. It could be crapping out or a wiring problem.
You've got the fault code, follow up on that
