Default 4.0 H.O to Renix swap.

Hey everyone I am new to this site and new to discussion forums in general so here I go I need some help from fellow XJ owners! So I had a 92 with the 4.0 H.O it failed local smog so my chance at classic vehicle registration which for Nevada means "emissions exempt" is out for a year. The XJ had excessive rust issues but ran well! Well I bought a 90 XJ off a customer last year she overheated it and seized the motor, she didn't want to spend the money so I got it. Well I decided to swap engines from the 92 to the 90. It has fought me every step of the way so far. The 92 has a manual transmission so I had to figure out a way to get pilot bushing out of the crankshaft, did that then I figured I would freshen the motor up and do a timing chain and gear set and rear main seal and oil pump etc. well I kept the H.O head and everything bolts up but the jeep runs so rough. I had to relocate the coolant temp sensor because the square drive plugs on the block were stripped. Well I replaced the vacuum harness and found my EGR solenoid was stuck wide open so I have bypassed that for now. But this thing is sputtering on acceleration and off idle. It's running extremely rich, I will lift the fuel rail tomorrow and see if I have a leaking injector. But since the ports of the heads are same size but shaped slightly different is sputtering a fact of life or is something else going on ? Anyone who has done the H.O to Renix swap what can I expect as far as Performance? Anything else I should consider? Thanks again!!!

Here's all you need:

Have you indexed the distributor?

Which intake gasket did you use? Must use the Renix one.

Need to get the CTS in the correct place if possible.

Thanks, yea I know my distributor is spot on I did index it. The cts is in the spot for the H.o sensor on the thermostat housing not much I can do being the plugs are stripped. That was a very in depth write up. Thank you so much! I used the Renix intake gasket.

Hey just updating ya! So it turns out one of my injectors were wide open just dumping raw fuel. I also ended up re routing the vacuum line to the map sensor it was hooked up to the port that has no vacuum 😜

I’m not understanding why indexing is necessary? Or cutting cap or whatever. I’ve got mine on TDC and it’s pointing to the #1 on the cap. What am I missing here?
