Default clutch or transmission?

I have just bought my second jeep this one being the 2 door 5 speed with the 4.0. it actually broke when I test drove it and then I later bought it. so what happened was I drove it, stopped, popped the hood, was checking it out, hear a pop noise (sounded like it spun the back rod bearing) got in push the clutch down and it stopped. so I started back to the guys house and was going from 3 to 2 at a 4 way stop. the jeep kills its self put it in N push the clutch start it up and let out. kills its again so I get pulled back. the guy come off of the price 1000 bucks so I bought it and now have got it to move but still makes a loud knocking noise. I just am not real sure where to start so I am asking you guys for a little help.

pretty much all of the clutch parts are new. slave, master, throw out bearing, and all of the clutch. was told either throw out or trans has no oil but I see no sign of a leak.

I appreciate any help.

it is a 97. it runs smooth and don t make a bit of noise with the clutch pushed in. as soon as you let out on the clutch it just makes a really hard knocking noise now but when it was killing its self it was almost like you was trying to power brake it without giving it gas before letting out on the clutch.

he had a shade tree mechanic look at it and he said it was stuck in two gears. after I got it home I put it in 1st and R getting pretty rough trying to get it to move finely is says POP and was moving but still makes the really loud knocking noise when the clutch out.

Could be bearings in the motor, or a map sensor, or a tps...how does it do if you have clutch in and punch the gas?

Sorry about that. Trying to do this on my app on my phone. Anyways. It runs smooth with no lights or noises at all with the clutch in. As soon as you let out though it gets to making a knocking noise.

I am not too worried about pulling trans. Although I have never done anything like this to a jeep I have chevys and toyotas and I'm sure they can't be any harder than the yotas.

Could be a broke shifter fork in the trans, or the interlock is broke......just don't let the clutch out anymore until you remove the trans.!
Lots of parts in that transmission, and even with the manual it could be a challenge to repair it.......

Just pulled the trans today. Got it on the ground and spun the shaft by hand spin about a half turn then it hit a hard spot. The shaft would move up and down about 3 16 of an inch. It would free and then spin again till it hit that spot. Guessing something it broke salvage yard has one that is already pulled and ready to go for 325. Gonna get it tomorrow unless someone on here tells me I have a simple fix.
