Clunk when coming to a stop, '01 XJ
After the vehicle warms up, when I come to a stop there is a little clunk and the vehicle jumps forward (minor). It is almost like I am getting hit in the rear. Very hard to discribe typing. It does not do it in Neutral, in 4WD it will make the issue less noticable. If I feather the vehicle to a stop the issue does not happne but will occur when taking off. Also, when taking off in 1/2 it does do it when coming to a stop, but the vehicle never makes it into 2nd. I have had a shop look at it and I did a transmision service. They do not know what it is. My original thought was that it seems to be in the driveline and not in the tranny since it does not do it in 1/2. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the slip yoke. Mine did this. My boot was loose and the slip yoke was dirty. What I did was remove the boot, clean and grease it real good, put it back together making sure the clamps are tight and it went away. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 98 XJ, dealership said it was nothing..... just dealt with it for a couple of years. Then I did my suspension. 2" lift and that clunking went away... go figure. so when I stop and start it's all good now. sorry, doesn't explain what it is but I found it odd that the lift helped it.

My 97 did the same thing. I cleaned and greased my slip yoke and I haven't hjad that problem for about a month now. I had a few different mechanics look at it also they couldn't find anything wrong with it. You might want to check u joints. And a question if your back springs are flat could that cause this problem also?

My '97 does the same thing and I always thought it was the rear shocks because if I come to a hard stop the rear stays up in the air a little then when I take off it settles an inch or so. I would guess this isn't the shocks (since they are almost brand new). The slip yoke seems like a likely culprit.

Wow! Thanks for the help guys. Sounds like greasing the yoke will work. I also plan on adding a 2" BB lift shortly (Once I find one). This may help as well.
