closed coolant system question

I ran the 89 XJ for a while today doing some testing for starting problems and checking thing over for leaks and whatnot, when I shut it down coolant started spewing out of the filler bottle. I know I need a new cap but I was wondering if it was just from the pressure in the system equalizing or if that was a indication of more...
It didn't overheat or go over 200 degrees the whole time and that was just sitting in the driveway for about 20 minutes.
New to the renix models I have always had H.O.
Thanks

A new cap is a good idea. However when you were checking for leaks, did you do something that allowed air to enter the closed system? I would suggest that you let the vehicle cool down and check how much antifreeze is in the reservoir. The antifreeze should not be more then half way the capacity of the reservoir. This will allow for expansion without overflowing the bottle. Keep your eye on it as it very well could be something else! :)

Yeah I know that I am going to have to burp it to get all the air out, there are no leaks in it at least. I had no coolant in the bottle after that happened, before it was at the level it should have been. So I am going to try and get some time, to work on it some more, working 7 days a week sucks.

If you can its not a bad idea.to switch to the open loop system.

I got my parts for pretty cheap.

WHAT HE SAID!
However, I had the same problem on all three of my older XJs with the closed system. It took me a month and many $$ to figure out what was causing it on the first one. What I finally found and it was the same on all three---the neck of the plastic jug was warped just enough that the cap(even a new OEM cap) could not completely seal.

well finally got a cap that seals, got it burped and filled so far so good, still have some minor things but its a jeep will always have minor things
