Default Clicking sound during braking

I have clicking sound when I brake normally or under hard braking. Its coming from the front driver side wheel. I can also hear it at lower speeds 25mph when braking. Its tough to reproduce. It doesn't happen every time I brake but about 75% it happens. I've tried to see if turning the wheel makes a difference and it doesn't seem to matter.

I've had the wheel off and checked for anything that looks out of place. I even had to replace the caliper because it locked up. It still does it under the same circumstances with new caliper, pads, and rotor. How can I figure out what it is? Could it be a wheel bearing or something?

Also I have grooved in the caliper bracket where the pads are supposed to slide. Could that be the noise?

The dust shield for the rotor can easily rub on it, but usually makes a grinding noise, not clicking.
If it was clicking while turning also, I would suggest the axle u-joints.

As you mentioned, the brake pads do slide on tabs that are part of the steering knuckle. When the tabs get a burr or groove, this can cause the brake to stick or drag. File them smooth and apply a thin coat of lube.

Clicking sounds make me think u-joints. Hear any clicking when you drive with your windows down?
