Cleaning Engine Block - Any obvious problems?

Hello all,

Replacing the cylinder head on my 01 xj. I got the head off (by myself - uhhuh) and now I'm looking at cleaning the block. I have heard brake cleaner recommended? What is the best solvent to use? Also are there any obvious problems someone can see here that I should be aware of? I'm a first timer so I don't know exactly what I should or shouldn't be looking for. Thanks errybody, can't wait to get back on the road with a healthy XJ.

(sorry for the quality of the fourth photo, I don't know why it ended up like that)

Cleaning inside or outside? heck if you are doing the outside use whatever works. gas works great. Inside yea i would use brake or carb cleaner. maybe brush some fresh oil on cylinder walls when done to prevent a really dry start.

If you want to clean the piston tops you can use Chrysler Cumbustion Chamber Cleaner. Get it at a Chrysler dealer.

Here's a site that shows how to.

Cleaning the deck surface? Something like brake cleaner sprayed on a rag, and wipe the deck with the rag, being careful not to knock the crud in the cylinders. That's what I do. Maybe others have better ideas.
