Default Cigarette lighter installation

Howdy everyone. I have real quick question. Can the cigarette lighter be replaced by pulling it out or does it require getting to the inside of the console? If the latter, how is it done? I ask because I have a history of breaking things during a repair.

You will need to remove the bezel. Looking down the lighter or power plug you will see two very small squares. Opposite each other. In each square you will see black plastic which is part of the bezel. You will need to pinch it just enough to clear those tabs to pull it out from the front. Now my experience has been you need pliers. Here is where a possible problem comes in. When you do that you put it out of round a little. If you try to reuse it having it seat in to lock properly might be a problem. Because you made it a little out of round. But if you are replacing it. Go to town. Now they can only go in one way. From the front. They have these ridges that line up with the slots in the bezel. I don't have a shot of the little black squares inside but do of the ridges and the slots on the bezel. Thinking this will help.

Sorry to revive the old thread, but this seems related. I want to put a newer 12v socket in this cigarette lighter spot. One that has a voltage readout and usb connections built in. However, it’s too large. Has anyone successfully removed the insert that accepts the original socket to make more room without destroying the face plate? Is it melted into place? I couldn’t get it to budge.
