Chrysler 8.25 Open to LSD Swap
Hey yall. I gotta 1997 XJ Sport 5 speed with a Chrysler 8.25 open diff. I"m 100% sure mine is open because I just changed the differential fluid. I know some 8.25 came with a LSD, and I'd like to swap a LSD into mine that way I can have some form of a locker while not running into any issues on the street.
What cars/models would I find the LSD in? Id like to pull one from a junk/scrap yard if possible because I'm a broke high school student...
Also, is there any place I could find one for less than $400?
thanks,
Walker

There's a good chance a junk yard limited slip will need to be rebuilt. The clutch packs wear out and will need to be replaced. You will also need to have it installed by a professional if you want the gears to last. You can't just bolt it in. You have to adjust the shim packs.
You're better off saving up your money until you can afford to get it done the right way. Otherwise you'll end up wasting the money you do spend.
One alternative is that you might be able to find a whole axle from a donor XJ and swap it in but you need to make sure it has the right gear ratio.

You said under $400 why not just put a $350 Spartan or Aussie locker in your open carrier? It would be easier since you don't have to swap carriers and reset backlash and the locker will work much better than a factory limited slip diff would.

I installed a Power Trax No Slip locker in my Chrysler 8.25 that is in my Jeep. Been about three years and totally satisfied. I chose this locker as the reviews all said that it is quiet and doesn't make excessive clicking when cornering. It has more than lived up to the reviews. Took about an hour to install, very easy to do. I paid around $400 from 4 wheel drive dot com..
make sure you look at the "no slip" model..
Hope this helps..
