Default Choosing a pre-cat, looking for help from 2k1 owners.

Switching XJs with the wife. She's getting the 2K, which is thankfully EPA setup for 49 state and RWD only (nice on gas, and not bad with snow tires), and Im taking the 2K1 with the rust and issues. Oh, and its out of inspection as of... last Friday?

I already have a full set of NGK O2 sensors, but looking to get a new pre-cat. I figure they are toast, she was driving it for weeks with a misfire code, which tends to burn right through them. Trying to not spend $700 on a set, and have a friend willing to let me in his shop and swap it all out next weekend.

My first choice was this: http://amzn.to/1Z0IVHb "Walker 52304 Ultra EPA Certified Catalytic Converter"

The reviews on amazon say (and show) its a piece of junk, and wont fit the XJ right.

The other 2 I find done specifically mention the XJ, and I know clearance on the grand and TJ are a bit different inside due to different engine mounts and body spacing.

http://amzn.to/1Z0JgK4 - "Eastern 20376 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter"
http://amzn.to/1Z0Jkt3 - "Davico 19018 Direct Fit Converter"

If found few mentions of the system in general, and not looking to alter the setup past factory (its lasted 120K, which means I probably might need to switch it at some point well into the future)

Go to a small local (one man) muffler shop and see what they will charge for one of the less expensive ones you may be surprised I was for a complete system on my 99.

Ive got local starter and alternator, even a radiator place, but only chain muffler houses. Cant see this being cheaper than 280, just in time to pull it out.

Little confused. I own an '00. CA emissions. Do not live in CA or NY. That Walker part # is for CA emissions vehicles not in CA. With a build date from 1/21/00. You say you own a Federal Emissions Jeep. You have the dual cat setup off the exhaust manifolds? Something does not seem right. How many O2 sensors do you have?

Does not say anything about being for Federal Emissions.

Im on Cherokee #5... We have a 2000 with the EPA setup, and a 2001 with the CA setup. The 2001 is the one that is throwing a cat error.

Im in PA, and can get any of the pre-cat setups, however, reviews show the walker one to be a piece of crap with an O2 port in the wrong place. While I appreciate the link, Ive also got $75 in Amazon gift cards

Ive seen the extension pipe mentioned 2 or 3 times. Might just get the long one and weld it into they system.

Got it. Was unsure what year and what kind of emissions. Throwing a P0432 code? While it appears most times it is the cat it is not always. Misfire codes while sometimes because of the heat of that dual cat doesn't mean the cat itself is bad. Ruled out all the other possible causes for the cat code? What kind of plugs do you run? Do you still have the heat shield on top of the intake manifold? Hate to see you spend that money if not necessary.

It's odd that people had so many problems with the Walker one, they're usually pretty good fitment-wise. The Eastern one should fit good too, they are both good companies. I've heard of Davico but don't have any personal experience. From the pics it looks like the Davico is actually the closest to OEM, but at $50 I'd go with the Eastern one. There's 2 reviews for it, one from an actual mechanic saying it's fine and another from some rando complaining about a refund.

This is assuming your cats are actually bad. My 2000 XJ came with the dual pre-cat setup, and no heat shield on the intake. I can't imagine the previous owner not having heat soak issues.

Oh, this one gets bad heat soak issues come summer. Once the wife lets go of the idea she needs 4wd, and takes over the RWD XJ, this one is getting not only a ragtop, but a set of 78 Datsun ZX280 turbo hood vents.

Right now, all stock. Stock spec tuneup, etc, etc.

And I have some aftermarket shielding to do as well. Forgot to check the timing, but the ECU just reset all sensors and hasnt thrown the CEL light yet. My mechanic is hoping he can fit me in today (located across from my day job office) and can inspect it before it goes again.

But Im still looking to make it be normal. As normal as these things can be.

Picked up my '00 XJ cheap about 2 1/2 years ago. 147K. Stock, running but not really drive-able, and neglected but not abused. Have many of the Jeep problems you read about on the forums. Funny thing is no heat soak issues, no misfire issues, and best I can tell no 0331 head issues. Least not yet. Knock on my head.

Also bought my 00 XJ cheap, but with 202k and a knocking engine haha. There was a receipt for "head work" so I'm betting the head had already cracked once. The knocking turned out to be broken piston skirts, dropped in a 96 engine and called it a day. (might have also gotten rid of the pre-cats )
