cherokee wont start
so i was cruising around during hurricane sandy i was going all day then all of a sudden the jeep died. tried starting it a couple times it would crank over fine just wouldn't start checked everything i could on the side of the road but finally called triple A and got it towed. when i started messing with it at my house i had no power to the truck at all it ended up being bad battery connection so i cleaned all the connections and put a spark tester on it when i went to crank it over boom started up. i was a little confused so i shut it off took the spark tester off and cranked it again and it started right back up but when i went to drive it it was bogging really bad. so i parked it again a couple days later i went to start it again and nothing. checked spark wasn't getting anything. so i started reading up on it today and the first thing popped in my head was cps replaced it still nothing so next i replaced the stator and still nothing. i ohmed my injectors got about 12.5 for all of them ohmed my coil and got 10.8k it seemed low compared to what ive read on here and the sparks there but it just seems weak when its cranked it sounds like it wants to start but wont then it backfires threw the intake. should i try anything else before i replace the coil? its a 1996 jeep cherokee 4.0HO
wont start cranks over fine replaced cps and stator ohmed my injectors about 12.5 across all ohmed my coil 10.8k backfires threw intake when trying to be started |

1. You need a strong, BLUE snapping spark for the engine to start. Yellow/orange/white indicates a weak spark which may not be strong enough to start the engine. What color is yours? If you have weak spark, test your "ignition coil". They can easily be tested for primary and secondary resistances with a manual and a meter.
2. If spark checks out as a GOOD spark (and only if), then move onto fuel. For a 96, you need approximately 49 psi of fuel pressure to start the engine. The only way you can confirm that is with a fuel pressure gauge. No shortcuts. Many parts stores will rent you one of these tools inexpensively if you don't have access to one. |
Yeah it's a yellow spark and I'm getting 10.8k resistance with the coil so I'm gonna have to see what it's suppose to be making

Do 1998's have a "coil" or only 2000-2001s?
