Cherokee Will Not Crank
Hey everyone, newbie here. I am the proud owner of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic... which does not crank anymore, so here I am asking you all for help.
Story Time: Mom took the Jeep into town to get pizza, parked the Jeep, went inside, came back out, Jeep wouldn't start. Tried jumping it. Nothing. Had it towed back to the house and it has been sitting in the same spot since.
Here are the things I have done:
-swapped in a new battery
-cleaned terminals
-put in a new starter and starter solenoid
-checked fuses underneath the hood and swapped a few around
-tested for voltage going to the always hot on the solenoid (12.2 volts)
-replace new NSS since the old one was actually cracked
As you can see, I have invested a lot of time and money into this project, but have had no success. Can someone please give some things to try to get it started? Also, I took a screwdriver and touched the always hot and ground together. The starter spun right up, so I know there is power going to the starter. When I lie underneath the Jeep and use the multimeter to touch the ignition thing on the solenoid while someone turns the key, I get nothing. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

First thought is to double check the work on the new NSS. Multimeter the connector to ensure that the correct pins get continuity when in the P/N position. This will help to rule out that the NSS is simply maladjusted (not positioned correctly to sense P/N and allow starter relay to engage). Or look up jumping the NSS connector with a paperclip to help rule it in/out.
Second thought is to inspect the ignition switch. A wire diagram is helpful at the ignition switch connector so that you can ensure that the correct pins see voltage when the key is turned to the start position. This voltage is what feeds the positive to the control side of the starter relay. The ground on the control side of the relay comes from the computer and is provided once the computer sees P/N from the NSS.
If the starter relay is jumped and allows starter to activate, I would say 90% that problem lies with NSS job or ignition switch.

fb97xj1 was nice enough to put the NSS pinouts on this recent post:

an easy (but not foolproof) test for maladjusted NSS is to move selector back & forth thru gears while holding key in "start" position (and foot firmly on brakes)
..also have some one check if reverse lights come on while doing this
I usually search for 12V (or lack of) with a small test light, backprobe & alligator clip setup
do all other ignition powered 12V items work?

Got it fixed everyone, thanks for your suggestions! Turns out a fuse was blown, so the only part that didn't need to be replaced was the starter, but I'll just leave it since the old one was not sounding too happy anyway.
