Cherokee Makes Growling Noise When Takin Off Fast
im in the market for getting a jeep and im a big fan of cherokees i went a few days ago to test drive a 95 cherokee sport with 165,000 miles on it and they want like 5400 for it....which seems pretty damn steep but anyways i test drove it and everything seemed good except for when sitting still then flooring it the cherokee makes a like growling grinding kinda noise somewhere up front when it launches off the line, but its only when taking off the line at full throttle if i was cruising at like 15 mph or something then floor it there was no noise...is this a normal sound out of a jeep or is something definitely wrong? any help please.

Thats the flux capacitor engaging. lol how could you not know that?!
But for real, I think it is normal. If anything, it would probably be a small exhaust leak that is opened up when you floor it.
Or it is just growling at the ricer next to it.
And you are right, $5400 is way steep

That growling you heard is the 4.0L Six shooter!
Seriously for $5400 nothingshould sound out of place. $5400 sounds more like a dealership price. I'd only consider that price if there was a new engine and tranny in it installed by a licensed mechanic. Just for comparo I bought my '97 Cherokee this spring with 110k on it for $3200. I have not had to do anything to it mechanically (besides reconnect speaker wires) in the past 12k miles that I've owned it. I'd pass on this one if I were you. Just my opinion.

x2 on pass! bought my first cherokee for 700 bucks!! nothin wrong with it except a slight over heating problem and a messed up boot on the stick shifter haha. my current cherokee was 1000 with a lift and another rear end w/ 4.56 gearing i think! just another over heating problem and another couple little issues that just needed a tweak or flush. try craigslist to find another jeep near ya if you havent yet.

I paid $900 for mine. Its an 87 with only 260,000 miles on it now. There was nothing wrong with it,drove it for six months, then I went crazy on it and have put like 3000 into it over the past few months.I love my jeep,my wife just dosn't under stand.

that is way too much for an xj. especially one with 164k
i once heard someone say "if you pay more than a grand for an xj you got screwed" which i find to hold some truth.
you can find some real bargains out there.
