Default Checking OBD-1 Error Codes

I have done thread searches & checked the OEM stickies. No luck
I just completed a head rebuild.
Did the normal things,
Head rebuild & gasket.
New Radiator,water pump,thermostat,condenser.
Cleaned throttle body & sensors.
Getting no spark to spark plugs.
Any ideas on first things to check,I am going over all connections now.
With a 94 4.0 auto,how do I check for OBD-1 trouble codes?
I have the code list from OEM sticky.

Most OBDII scanners can read OBDI codes with an adapter. Many scanners are sold with the necessary adapter.

No spark is often (not always) the CPS (or CkPS, Crank Position Sensor, located on bellhousing), or possibly the Cam Position Sensor (located in the distributor).

Doing a head, it would probably be pretty easy to whack the CkPS.

Somewhere around here there's a procedure for testing your CkPS. If it's not sending signal to the PCM, the PCM will not allow spark to happen.

Also, double check your grounds! Grounds. Grounds.

Do you have juice coming to the coil?

Well my mechanic buddy hooked up the o2 sensor but not the CPS.
Started right up.
Something up front is squealing like a pig.
Seems to be passenger side.
Replaced water pump, idler pulley & fan clutch, belt. No coolant yet.
Adjusted belt to spec (1/2" play for 12" span).
I don't think it makes a difference but replaced AC hoses also.
Fan clutch to water pump bolt spec is 15 to 22 ft lbs.
I can't get a torque wrench in there, snug bolts down nicely.
Any ideas?
P.S replaced with Procool water pump #97082 from Pepboys.

If you end up replacing the cps, do yourself a huge favor and only by a MOPAR replacement cps. The cheap cps's you find at the parts store either won't work at all or wont last very long (ask me how I know).... It really sucks to be in the boondocks when your duralast cps decides to quit....

There's also a procedure for getting the codes via the odometer. It's around here somewhere.

Retrieving OBD codes on the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) OBD1 Models: 1991-1995

1) Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on and then off (if equipped).

2) Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Record 2-digit
fault codes as displayed by flashing MIL.

3) For example, fault code 23 is displayed as flash, flash, 4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause,
other codes stored are displayed in numerical order. When MIL begins to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. Start over if count is
lost.

NOTE: A "5-5" will always occur to signal the end of the sequence. Some will flash the "1-2" code indicating a recent battery disconnect even if you haven't done it. Ignore these two codes, and mark down all others.

That's for 97+. I've never heard that you can do that on a 96 and older with the old style gauge cluster.
