Default check engine light question on a 95

I have a 95 chreokee country and took a trip from cali to las vegas. When i went up the steep grades my check engine light would come on. Although i was not over heating and i had plenty of coolant in my radiator and plenty of oil in the motor. When i pulled over to check things out, everything looked normal. I then restarted the jeep and the check engine light was off . Everything was fine but it did the same thing to me one more time on the way home. Any ideas to as why this was happening to me? I cant get a code out of it if the light doesent stay on, i want to make sure i dont have any future problems.

I did this going up hill?
Is it running any differently?

Transmission fluid low, Tranny getting hot???

Really, it could be a number of things... It could be possible that your XJ is throwing and storing "Soft Codes". You might want to keep checking to see if anything comes up, ya know?

IMHO- If it is running okay and all your fluids are good, drive it a bit to note when your light goes on. Pay close attention to your gauges and keep checking for codes...

That's what i would do!!!

Yes only uphill,i just changed the fluid in the trans and the one in the transfer case. Its a 5 speed, All my gauges seem to be working properly. It is still running smooth and plenty of power through the gears.

There's probably trouble code(s) set and stored in the ECU. Don't guess, have the ECU scanned and the trouble identified. Most auto parts stores have scanners. Let us know what you found.

they only sell them its against the law i hear to let u use them like they used to and then buy your parts needed to fix your car. something about mechanic shops loosing money. Im not sure if that is true but its what ive experienced in the past.

i cant scan it since the check engine light is not on anymore. it will only pick it up if the light is on.

Most shops scan for free, if not you can rent one for a nominal charge. Napa, Autozone... A quick diagnostics will pick it up. You have to reset the ECU to delete codes that are stored.

most hills it held constant speed well although the cajon pass i had to go into 3rd for a while. I did have luggage in the roof as well as the hatch was loaded with the ice chest. I also had 4 adults and my daughter in her car seat, she is 11 months old.

For those that dont know the cajon pass is a long uphill stretch, when you get toward the end it gets really steep. Some hills i did need fourth, i would say 4th is a pretty all around uphill gear if youve got enough momentum 5th will do it about 75mph

it may have still stored a code, but if its obd-I part stores may not be able to check it (special tool for each brand) always worth trying

95 models you can check by turning the key off ana on several times. Get a manual from Autozone and it can tell you how and what the codes mean.
