check engine light does not come on

I just purchase a 93 cherokee sport. When I turn the key to the first position the check engine light does not come on. How did the previous owner disable the light? I need to know before I can pass emissions.

It might just be the bulb is burned out.

Pull the instrument cluster. The bulbs are behind the panel on the left where the warning/info message appears.

Thank you. I pulled the cluster. The connector had worked itself loose. I plugged it back in an all works fine.
