check engine light

I bought my jeep with the check engine light on im working on getin it off so i can get it inspected i did the turn key thing to get the code sequence and it blinks 23 times 3 times then stops 4 times then stops 5 times then stops 5 times then stops then 5 times then stops on the 6th time any help on wat this code means and how to fix it would be great thanks

If I understand your post correctly two code numbers stand out. The first is #34 which idicates a problem in the cruise control circuit and needs to be diagnosed by a qualified tech. The second is #55 which is the end of code output number.

Try it and see if a new code shows up.

You said you had a code 34. That's the speed control shorted or open circuit, not the AC clutch (code 33). Unplug the cruise control motor and see if the light goes out. And check for cut or pinched wires.
I'm no electrician so I can't help with these repairs.

Any help on this would be great I have to get this check engine light off so I can get this car on the road and inspected by the beging of next month

Did you try dealing with the cruise control, you never updated on this. If you are waiting on someone to tell you how to fix it off a code that is not going to happen. I have an emissions error on mine and it could be dozens of issues. Try taking it in to a shop and have them look at it and give you a quote on the repair. Get as many details from them on what exactly is the problem and what they plan on doing. Then go pick it up and do it yourserlf.

Thanks I'm not tryin to get u guys to tell me how to do it I just didn't realy no how to read the codes I'm tryin to get a scanner from my friend tonite

j0eridesbikes 03-16-2010 09:53 PM

so i used my friends scanner today and got the code p0325 when the engine was off then the code p1899 when the car was on which is differnt things then wat the jeep was tellin me with the turn key codes

2.5TURBO 03-16-2010 10:15 PM

I checked out the chiltons manual and it doesn't show a code p0325

and p1899 is P/N switch stuck in park or in gear, so maybe this is where the p/o got his thought about the transmission.

Hey frankz the 96 and later model use the obd2 but it displayed obd1 codes. Did they do 1/2 years in 96? Also I thought there were some jeep systems that use a 3 digit code or maybe I'm just crazy?

12 battery disco
33 air conditioner clutch relay circuit
45 non existent? not listed in the book
55 end sequence

I would unhook the battery for 30 seconds and reset all codes, drive it and see if it comes back with the same ones.

SeriousOffroad 03-16-2010 10:17 PM

Those are OBDII codes. all 1996 XJ's are OBDII.
FWIW:
My research shows the same code descriptions as you posted.

Have you disconnected the battery to reset the ECM?

j0eridesbikes 03-17-2010 07:11 AM

Yea I discounected the battery last week and I've been charging it every other day cuz I have to get a new one. The kid I bought the jeep off of said it needed a transmison swap that's y the check engine light was on so I guees ill try all those things be4 I go doin a transmission swap

j0eridesbikes 03-20-2010 11:11 PM

I just relized that since the kid I bought the jeep off of put a switch as the starter instead of the regular turn key would that make it so my car can start in drive since I have the park neutral switch stuck code ?
