check engine light

Ok so took it to autozone, He did check on it and it said altanator is going bad. But here is the thing that check engine light has been going on for some 6 months at least. My dash volt gage is 14 and not going down and seems to work.
It always starts up and no sign of dead battery. I will do volt test i am not sure what it is to be at?

Did you get the code that was being thrown by the CEL?

rand4x4 03-11-2013 03:33 PM

No he just read it to me, no code. And the check engine light is on and off about 50% time.

Would really help here for us to have the actual code number.

With interpreting OBD, the devil is in the details.

Code number is necessary.

Check the battery voltage with an inexpensive voltmeter (preferably a DVOM) while the engine is running. Look for 13.8-14.2 volts. If the alternator was not working correctly, it would not be cranking/running normally for long.

A couple of suggestions for you:

1. Buy a code scanner, voltmeter and other needed tools. Basic tools are not expensive or difficult to use. Being able to talk to the computer with a code scanner (and real time data displays) will eliminate your reliance on people of questionable intelligence to solve simple problems.

2. Educate yourself! Ask questions here, find out what tools and test equipment you need to properly diagnose Jeep problems, so that you can easily repair them yourself. It's easy...we can help; it's legal and everything, promise.

Dayum! Sure hope no members take offense, especially sense we've only heard one side of the story.

The check engine light does not come on because of a bad alternator. Go back when the light is on and tell him to print the code out. That's what he is supposed to do any way.

Always best to get the actual codes and record them. You can post them up here and/or google them to help in the diagnostic process.

Well i changed out Alt, It was so rusty i broke the small 7m nuts off just to get it off. The worst part was not knowing about how to get the belt back on.
It took half a can of PD to get tenshion bar and bolts to ajust everything back on. New name for jeep is Knuckle buster.
