Sorry I'm so dense but with the D-Rings, do you unhook the D-ring? Not having any I thought they were welded 'closed' but if that's the case, that's too easy (lightbulb <on>). DUH! I got in my small, little-used brain that the strap had to be looped somehow on both vehicles.

Thanks! I'm trying to outfit my XJ for the weather we're going to have and would like to be able to help someone out if needed. Sorry to hijack the thread!
You unscrew the pin from the ring and put the loop through then screw it back in.

Pretty easy.

Anybody have a picture of this for someone that's not the sharpest knife in the drawer?

Thanks!
i got a tow pintle off a pick up truck when i was in iraq and a small shackle and i just run the strap thru the shackle and then attach the shackle on to the pintle. but ive just but the loop of one strap over a ball hitch and then to the other truck and that worked just fine because of the way the ball is shaped the tension holds it on there pretty goot but if its at some crazy angle then you can just feel the looped end of the strap thru the hitch and then fish the hitch pin thru the loop but instead of a hitch pin i use a grade 8 bolt

also i come across these alot becuase of work... but i used some tow hooks off a 6x6 peterbuilt truck and they are rated for liek 12 tons. i used them on my cj they look sick! and you will never break them but make sure u properly attach them to the unibody! you should be able to find them on any twin screw semi truck.

You are not looking for d-rings, you will be looking for a screw clevis, or screw pin clevis. A d-ring is attached to a bumper and can not be removed.
