Changing Transfer Case Fluid
 

Hey!
Did a quick search and couldn't find the answer :brickwall: to this simple question:

How do you change the fluid in your x-fer case? Should I use a bottle with a hose?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered but I couldn't find a response and sorry if it's a basic question but I've got a noise in my x-fer case and think this might help. :dunno:

Just use a gear oil container if you have one laying around or any bottle with a tube but make sure its cleaned out of gear oil first...Tj

What I do is I buy my trany fluid in the big jugs and I bought a hand pump from the parts store that bolts right to the lid area and has a tip that snaps into the t-case fill hole. Hand pump it in and it's all good.

Be sure you put the right kind of fluid in your transfer case, too. It takes (ATF) Automatic Transmission Fluid.

It takes what ever you have in your TRANNY. My tranny uses Dextron 3 so I would put Dex 3 in mine.

dex/mercon is what m 98 called for...it only uses about 1-1.5Q and takes 10 mins to chnage

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with Royal Purple? Is it worth the add'l expense? (My jeep has 147k with a 4.0L and auto trans)

The diffs are super simple, but you can make a helluva mess if you're not careful ans patient, and getting the new lube in there is a pain, but it's not all that bad...
Just amke sure you know what axles you have, and double check the new gaskets against them before you tear the covers off.
I use performance/race ATF in my stuff with Lucas, works like a dream.

Yeah like bowtieguy said changing the diff fluid is way easy. Main thing is the rear has a plug that doesn't screw in and it a pain in the rear to get off sometimes so be carefull with it so you don't tear it up.

I personally prefer full synthetic in my diffs. I think it's better for them. Lucas oil or Royal Purple both make good fluids.

Any good Dex/Merc trany fluid will work in your trany or t-case.

Just did the diff's yesterday. Smashed my right index finger bad enough to split my finger nail while doing the front one. The front one is the more difficult one to do. I just cramed a small funnel in the hole and pour really slow. Both take a bit over 1.5 qt. so you'll have extra case you spill some. I used RTV diff gasket maker and it rocked so far

I just changed the T-case fluid yesterday. Here is a little how-to:

I use an old Palmolive bottle with some clear tubing attached to the cap. You just squeeze the bottle.
