changing out the range selector switch/nss

changing out the range selector switch/nss
ok I tried to salavage an old Transmission range selector but it snapped off on removel, so I guess im gonna go buy one. when i pull teh current one off how do i avoid snaping off internal parts? and can anyone provide me with what the part is suposed to look like whole? 
any help or real advice would be apreciated. ty
