Default center pins

I'm in the process of building a set of bastard packs for my wifes and my jeep and was wondering what should use for a center pin. Can I use a grade 8 bolt that fits in the hole.

Do not use anything except a real center bolt. When you go to an auto parts store ask for it by that name. If you say center pin, they won't know what you are talking about. Center bolts are soft, but tough. If you use a grade eight, it will break because it is too brittle.
