CEL came on

My 96 XJ's CEL came on last night. It has 195k on the clock. Running fine otherwise. Any thoughts as to what it might be> I recall when I had my 92 the CEL came on automatically at around 95k. Is this a similar event? XJ seems to be running fine.

I do have a wireless plug in OBD2 device that I can view the results on my phone. I'll check it out later today.

Without checking the code or having noticable issues there is no way to tell.

Hundreds of possibilities. Strategy is always the same. Pull codes, post them here and then take a "testing based approach" on determining root cause.

Interpreting codes is not always straight forward.

most likely a failed O2 sensor, but only way to be sure is to pull the codes.

not all OBD2 reader will work with '96 XJs, even the ones that will take some fiddling to get set, so be aware
something to do with early protocols of OBD2...my 10/96 worked fine, but the 4/96 called out "OBD1"..until I got a BAFX scanner

+1 on the BAFX.

Apologize that I'm hijacking, but, what BAFX scanner does everyone recommend? It will scan any vehicle?
