Catalytic Converter Smoking
Hi CF members!
I started to notice my catalytic converter smoking a little bit a couple of days ago. I first thought it might have been condensation runoff from a/c making its way to the converter, but I thought again. my engine temp is running a little above the 210 mark (215?), but the other day when I noticed smoke, I was idling a lot and engine temp got to 220. today temp got no higher than slightly over 210, but some smoke still coming from converter. Smoke doesnt smell funny like hydrogen sulfide or anything. and the smoke is a white color. and it seems like mileage is down a little bit. Do i simply need to replace the converter with a direct fit one? was thinking of using this one from oreilly's. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2404&ppt=C0022 |
Mine is too.
I found that the front trans seal is kaput. It was leaking from the bellhousing down on the exhaust pipe. When rolling at 55-60 it leaked back to the cat. Check for leaks on the trans.

But a leaky trans seal wouldn't translate to higher engine temps...would it? Mine is leaking from the rear main seal, that's my source for the smoke.

210-215 isnt hot for a Jeep.
210 is normal, thus 210 is at the center of your gauge. 215 no problems. 230, 240, theres other issues.

I know this is an old thread but did you ever find out if it was a bad cat or something else? I'm having similar problems.

mine did the same thing and it ended up being the xfer case output shaft seal leaking. which was caused by the vent on the xfer case being plugged off
