Bought some real tree 2d camo shirting material from the fBric store to fix the sagging headliner in the 88. It's a pretty heavy duty material. Anyway, put the board in the basement, stripped the old tack off. Sprayed the board with s full can of 3m 88. Tacked it on all nice like......then ****. Went to pull a corner tight to staple it on the back, and the whole side pulled up so no way it is going to hold. Idk whether to drop the 50 or so on a few cans of the 3m 90, or go to industrial strength 3m 1300l that they use on boats or scotch weld. Anyone have any experience with custom headliners?

BleepinJeep does a video on redoing headliners in Cherokees on Youtube, and after a few attempts he actually claimed that 3m Super 77 will work better for headliners than the 88 will, as he had the same problem with the 88 and it would just come right off.

I apologize, I just went back and watched the video, he tried the 3m 90 against the super 77, and claims the 77 works better, so I feel as if the 90 doesn't work, the 88 is about the same.

Buy either 3m or Permatex headliner adhesive, you'll need two cans of youre conservative with it. Spray one coat horizontal then wait 5 to 10 minutes for it to tack up, then spray another coat vertically and let it tack up, of you have enough then put on another coat going horizontally. You spray both the fabric and headliner board like this and let both get very sticky and put them together. I like to let mine cure in that position for 24 hours before doing anything with it.

I had good success with the permatex headliner adhesive. Mine has held up for a couple years now. Sprayed the board and the fabric, let it tack up for a few minutes and it worked flawlessly

Oh wow thanks for the rapid replies. I didn't spray the fabric I just did the 3 coats on the board. I'll try the method of spray sit spray sit, spray fabric then tack. Maybe that's where I went wrong

Yeah both pieces need to be sprayed. After you put on all your coats and its tacky just stick the two together. Afterwards it shouldn't move at all. If you're gonna pick up new glue I'd use the Permatex headliner glue, its half the price of 3M and unlike some 3M glues I've never had it let go in warm weather.

Use the 3M super 77. I bought 3 cans and used all three redoing my headliner, over head console, rear speaker bar and two sun visors. Here is how mine turned out.

I used the loctite 300 heavy spray and haven't had any problems so far holding on two years now. But I also prep the board more then usual.
I went around the edges and added fiberglass to any weak areas like the front corners, back and all the holes then, applied resin to stiffen the board up. Sanded, then sprayed the board and fabric, half at a time then tucked about a two inches of fabric and applied glue where needed. I only used one can also.

Low money and high dreams

I did the same thing camouflage. I just used a bedsheet.its clean and light. I used super 77 and have had no problems. Applied it in 10 degree weather and so far it's doing great. Only used a quarter of a can. Spray fabric and leg it tack up before you stick the two togather.

I've always used 3M 90. I've had the best luck with it.

It's $13 per can in Lowes and home depot vs $25 per can in the autoparts stores.
