Canada built 98' XJ map/dome lights not matching
Key isnt needed. Sorry about that.
Headlights off and dimmer off.
Dimmer is off when turned right (past the click).
Doors closed except one being tested.
Remember, there is a switch in the cargo lamp. Remove the button part of the assembly so lights turn off. There is a small chance that the lights are on because the cargo lamp is pressed. So, install a button switch there and test it - hatch can be open when testing. (with hatch open, it turns lights on/off).
I need to take the cover off the cargo lamp and remove the switch, but I'm pretty sure it defaults to off. I can't get to it now to check though.
(it's crazy how many things turn those lights on) I'd think that a 'fail-to-off' condition would have been way more user friendly overall than 'fail-to-on'

So I put a bulb in the passenger kick panel and removed the cargo light from the plug. (No key, dimmer to right of click.)
I did it with the tailgate open and closed.
I went to every door opening it and pressing the light button, no change with or without tailgate open. Also tried it with the cargo light connected.
The wires under the driver and passenger are ticked up tightly and snug. There was no play or change in bulb intensity.
I tried to mess with he dimmer switch since It had flickered in the past, no change in the bulb. Also squeezed all the door jam wires, no change.
Looking for more ideas, not sure where to go yet.

Try removing the plunger switch from driver door and swapping it with the passenger side.
Other than that there isnt any easy troubleshooting that I know of. Disconnect each part of the circuit until the rest of the go out?
Trace each wire/switch, isolate, and test for short to ground.
I found my short by closing doors, getting in jeep, and beating interior panels until i found a flicker.
I by some chance there are two problems with the lights, itll bs nearly impossible short of rewiring the light circuits.
I got nothing else to suggest beyond that.

I really appreciate your help, it looks like it is compounding. Feels like there's another bundle of wires broken behind the dash. There was only 1 wire each front door that was broken and they were speaker only. I fixed em but rewired for 4ch amp anyway.
I've had my dash apart a couple times - water leak around AC/Heat vent, adding speakers in non-stock locations, and installing LEDs for instrument lights - gauges and such.
Good luck with the wiring.
Let us know how it goes.
