Default can i top off conventional gear oil with synthetic

just picked up a 97 cherokee, having the u joints and ball joints done. the guy told me to bring a quart of gear oil to top off the diff bc some will leak out during the job.

no one carries conventional 75w90 anywhere, its nuts. so can i just buy synthetic and use that?

i plan on changing the diff fluid eventually, but i don't have the time right now

for a short term solution, yes, but for long term, you want the same type of fluid (all dino or all synthetic)

Just change it all it takes is a few minutes (15 max) then you know that their is no water in the differential, condition of the gears and proper weight. brand lube is in it.

Does anyone know how much fluid does 8.25 and the front d30 take? And what's type of RTV to use to seal the lid?

A little more that 3 bottles. I always buy 4 and have a little extra. A little more the 2 in the rear and a little more than 1 in the front.

Regular RTV silicone. I use the black one.

IIRC the manual specifies 2.2L in the rear, and 1.3L in the front. For reference each bottle is one Litre (L) ... think that's a pint in the US?

We use litres over here in the US for some things, even if it gets spelled differently. Doesn't help with knowing how many are in a quart, though. One is slightly less than the other.

My conversion app tells me that 1qt is .9464L, but the app could be wrong.

Doesn't matter what it says on the bottle really, add oil until it weeps out the plug hole and you are done.

Just so it's clear, be sure to buy 4 bottles (whether they're quart or liter), as 3 won't quite be enough.

make sure to buy a can of brake cleaner, and spray that onto a lint-free wipe and wipe down both mating surfaces (axle housing and diff cover mating surfaces) before using the RTV

Good point. Lacquer thinner works as well.
